Founded in 1965, the University of California Natural Reserve System is the largest university-operated natural reserve system. The UCNRS mission is, “to contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service at protected natural areas throughout California.” Within the UCNRS, University of California - Santa Barbara (UCSB) manages seven reserves, including Sedgwick Reserve and Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserve.
